Drug Industry Immunity: Michigan is the only state that gives absolute immunity to the drug industry by protecting them against suits from state residents seeking damages from side effects of prescription drugs. A law signed by then-Governor John Engler, strips Michigan residents of the right to hold drug companies accountable when their products injure or kill, shields drug companies from responsibility for their actions, and leaves taxpayers holding the bill. Michigan Citizen Action has built a coalition of victims who have taken prescription drugs (approved by the FDA) that have caused death of severe damage to the victim’s of family members’ health. The coalition known as DIIME, Drug Industry Immunity Must End, has been fighting for a repeal of drug industry immunity for over 18 months, visiting Legislators, testifying at hearings, traveling around the state to hold town hall meetings. The state House approved a package of bills on February 22, 2007 that would repeal Michigan’s unique and dangerous law.
Cable Competition Bill: Michigan Citizen Action was instrumental in passing HB 6456 into law in December 29, 2006 Public Act 480’06. This bill provides a statewide video franchising agreement that changes the way in which the old method of issuing franchises for cable TV providers. Additionally, this legislation provides additional consumer protections, including:
The Michigan Public Service Commission will issue state wide franchises and assist consumers with complaints (as with other utilities)
Consumers are protected from being slammed or crammed
Consumer will only pay 5% of the franchise fee based on their bill, not based on total revenue of the provider
This legislation allows other providers of video TV service to enter the market place, allowing consumers to have a choice in the cable TV services.
Change America Now: Michigan Citizen Action conveyed a coalition that included representation from the following organizations: the Sierra Club, United States Student Association, SEIU, AFSCME, United Food and Commercial Workers, Michigan Education Association, ACORN, Michigan AFL-CIO and League of Conservation Voters to launch a new campaign in Michigan called Change America Now (CAN). CAN is a national campaign mounted by nearly 40 organizations in 31 states to pass through Congress the economic elements of the 100 Hour legislative agenda, as outlined by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA).
Emergency Campaign for America’s Priorities: Michigan Citizen Action is part of the Emergency Campaign for America’s Priorities (ECAP), a nationwide campaign of national and grassroots organizations committed to reversing the Administration’s policy of drastic cuts to programs that primarily benefit the poor and middle class in order to finance tax cuts that benefit the wealthy and special interests. Michigan Citizen Action released First Things First Michigan, which details the impact of the proposed FY 2008 Federal budget on Michigan residents. Michigan Citizen Action has been providing organizing support for rallies, press conferences, and organized a letter-to-the-editor campaign to educate the public about the disastrous impacts, of the budget policies, on Michigan.
